Finding the incidence of a disease

Are you curious about the levels of illness in your city, state, or the whole country? There are now public web pages that publish tracking data on measles, SARS-CoV-2, RSV, influenza, norovirus, and more. As two examples, wastewater scan is a collection of wastewater treatment plants that test for a variety of illnesses in the water. It can be an early warning sign that illness is rising in the community. Wastewater is a great medium to test because pathogens eventually end up in it, and it is a completely non-invasive way to monitor an area without violating anyone’s privacy. I do wish more treatment plants were participating. A second source is outbreaks near me. This is a crowdsourcing website where individuals sign up and routinely report how they are feeling. It’s a great way of seeing the health of an area. Right now, almost 8 million people report to the organization. I am not sure how frequent the reports are, but if a sizeable number of those 8 million report, it could be quite useful.
